Detail of Lea Long Dress in Terrazzo Azure
Zardozi Embroidery. The term "Zardozi" derives from Persian: zar meaning gold and dozi meaning embroidery, literally translating to "gold thread stitching". This opulent metal-thread craft was introduced to India around the 12th century via Persian cultural exchanges. It flourished to its peak during the Mughal Empire, when it was reserved exclusively for emperors, nobles and royal ceremonies. Luxurious Zardozi garments adorned Mughal court robes, ceremonial tapestries and royal wedding attires, featuring elaborate gold coil wires, silver strips, gemstones and reflective sequins. Following the decline of the Mughals, the craft suffered neglect and dwindled for decades. Its primary traditional production hubs remain Varanasi (Banaras), Lucknow and Farrukhabad in Uttar Pradesh.
Pomegranates, sacred in Greco-Roman and Byzantine art, immortalized in fractured brilliance.
